Join the members, friends, and guests of the Canada-United States Law Institute for its 42nd Annual Conference. As the Administration of both countries continue creating and reacting to domestic ground-shifts across the policy spectrum, the resulting tensions continue to impact the breadth of the bi-national relationship. Below the 48th Parallel, the Trump Administration continues to pursue its “America First” agenda, seeking a return to a more U.S.-centered foreign policy. It has done so by re-opening negotiations of NAFTA, withdrawing from the TPP negotiations, reopening confrontation on the Softwood Lumber issue, decreasing funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and withdrawing from the Paris Accord on climate change. Conversely, Canada has remained a supporter of NAFTA, TPP, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, as well as multilateral initiatives on climate change and human rights, with Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirming Canada’s commitment to these efforts. Such divergences have created friction within the bilateral relationship not seen for some time – yet there remain significant areas of cooperation. These include the areas of Energy, National Defense, and the joint stewardship of shared resources and the border at large. Will longstanding ties continue to guide the relationship, or do diverging interests mean a prolonged period of difficulty? Within the framework of this dynamic and shifting relationship, CUSLI will bring together law, policy, business, and government experts from Canada and the United States to explore what these developments mean for the historically close relationship between the two countries.
